When it comes to unclogging a toilet, prevention is better than the cure

If you have a toilet that keeps clogging up and you are bored with getting the toilet plunger out, then its time to consider whether there is a reason why the blockages keep happening. In this article we post a series of questions, some to do with the way the toilet is working and others to do with how it is being used, that are designed to identify what is causing the problems. Surely when it comes to unclogging a toilet, prevention is better than the cure.

The first thing to consider is whether the toilet is adjusted property. If you have a low water flow during the flush cycle it will not create a siphon with the result that blockages may occur. You want to ensure that the maximum amount of water is flowing through the toilet. Open the tank and check to see whether the water reaches its maximum level, just below the overflow tube. If it doesn’t adjust the ball float to ensure that it does.

Then check the handle. When it is pressed does this push the flapper up high enough to allow enough water out into the toilet bowl? You may need to shorten the chain on the flapper to make sure it allows more water through. Check also that the bowl fill tube is correctly connected. It it isn’t the flush volume will be reduced and flushing performance will be less effective.

If the toilet appears to be working properly than the blockages are most likely being caused by the way people are using the toilet. Gather together people in the house and explain to them that toilet paper should not be balled up before being placed in the bowl. Also sanitary towels or napkins should never be placed in the toilet bowl. It’s also a good idea to avoid using toilet fresheners that hang inside the toilet as these have been known to detach, fall into the bowl and get stuck in the toilet trap way.

With luck you may never need to unclog a toilet with a plunger ever again.
