Mineral makeup can give you a bare and natural look, or can be applied in layers for flawless, clump free look.

Whatever your skin type — oily, dry, normal, sensitive — and whatever type of foundation makeup you prefer — loose powder, pressed powder, liquid or cream — there is a mineral makeup product for you. You can achieve a matte look or a luminous glow. Mineral makeup can give you a bare and natural look, or can be applied in layers for flawless, clump free look.

Loose powder foundation

This is the most popular and well-known type of mineral makeup. Although it is  a dry powder, there are formulations for dry and normal skin, as well as for oily skin. The powders for oily skin often have oil absorbing ingredients in them like kaolin clay. They usually do not have ingredients like bismuth oxychloride or micas that add shimmer. There are also loose powder foundations formulated for people with dry and combination skin. These can be matte or shimmery, and some are actually creamy to the touch. They blend well with the natural oils on the skin or with the moisturizer applied a few minutes before the makeup is dusted on with a brush.

Pressed powder foundation

Pressed powder foundation is the kind that comes in a compact. Unlike loose powder foundation, which contains only dry ingredients, these foundations have some oily and moisturizing ingredients. They contain much less of these than a liquid foundation does, but the particles are not loose. This also comes as either matte or luminous, and some products contain oil absorbing ingredients, while others contain more moisturizing and nourishing ingredients for dry skin. Some people prefer this type of foundation simply because it can be less messy than a loose powder.

Liquid mineral foundation

Liquid mineral foundation contains more moist and oily ingredients. It often contains things like jojoba, almond oil and aloe vera. It may also have ingredients like green tea extract and other botanical extracts. This is often a good choice for people with dry skin or people who want full coverage. It is hard to achieve a very light, “no makeup” look with liquid foundation. It can be applied with a brush for fairly light coverage.
