Even though they’re easy to install compare to other types of lighting, outdoor solar lighting fixtures still require a little bit of care if you want to get the best use out of them.  If you don’t care for them properly, you’ll end up not being able to get much more than one or two years worth of use out of them.  Here are three things that you should never do with your solar lights.

Place Them In the Shade

Solar powered garden lighting needs to be placed in direct sunlight for at least several hours a day to completely charge up the battery.  Some lights, particularly higher quality ones, can work in the shade and might even burn for most of the night.  However, placing them in the shade stops the battery from completely charging and over time this degrades the battery’s performance so much that it dramatically shortens the life span of your lights.  If you want to get the longest use out of them, keep them in the sun as much as possible.

Let Them Get Covered In Snow

If you live in an area that’s prone to heavy snowfalls and you’re installing garden lights, you might want to think about bringing them inside in the winter.  Not only will the snow that covers them stop the panels from charging the battery, but if the lights are low to the ground, the snow could break them.  If the snow doesn’t break them you could still end up with a problem if a family member forgets where the lights are and steps in the wrong area.

Don’t Clean Them

One thing that you should do with any lights, including you solar lights, is clean them once a year.  This will keep them shining bright and clean off the solar panel so that the lights can charge and function to the best of their ability.

Following these simple steps will make sure that you home and property look the best they possibly can year round, and that your solar lights last for a very long time.
