Do you ever notice how calm and cool secret service agents appear and are always depicted on film? Are you like most people who, consciously or unconsciously, secretly wish to be as collected and mysterious-looking as them? Wishing to go to work every day, armed with the most important accessory for the job – dark sunglasses – in hand?
Or what about celebrities and law-enforcers? Do you think they will appear as mysterious, or their looks as effective, if they weren’t wearing shades? Indeed, what used to be just a simple tinted eyewear has turned into a fashion must-have.
Sunglasses, admittedly, are one of the most popular fashion accessories in the consumer market, with so many people wanting to be trendy, cool and attractive. Because of its ever-growing mass appeal, more and more manufacturers are joining in the bandwagon. Some have even launched massive marketing campaigns around some of their newly-signed up celebrity sunglass endorser.
Dark shades, because they are heavily tinted, can very well serve certain individuals, like those who prefer not to let others see their eyes when performing their duties (secret service, federal agents, or poker players); those who want to hide or be more discreet when out in public (celebrities); those who perform outdoor activities and want to protect their eyes from the sun’s glare (sportspeople, fishermen), among others.
Gone are the days when the dark sunglass is just your typical black lens with black frame. Today’s shades come in all eye-catching forms, shapes, sizes, designs and color – and therefore help highlight the wearer’s personality. Lenses now come in different colors aside from the basic black: blue, brown, green, pink, silver, and so on. Frames of different shapes and sizes can also be had: butterfly, cat-eye, oval, rectangular, square, wraparounds, and many more.

However, some sunglasses are designed exclusively for use in sports. Not only do sunglasses give the sportsperson some added style, but more importantly, it improves their overall performance because shades serve as their main optical defense against harsh outdoor conditions such as UV rays and the sun’s glare. And because of technological advances, the sports sunglass has even evolved so that they are now capable of repelling moisture and debris on lenses, as well as protecting lenses against sudden impacts.
Celebrities are, perhaps, the main driving force in bringing sunglasses into the fashion forefront. Famous people love wearing shades in different situations and occasions – on the red carpet (to protect from the flashing bulbs), out in public (to be discreet and not cause much attention; hide unmade-up faces; cover puffy eyes due to colds or heavy crying; or if you want to be more dramatic about it, conceal unsightly black eyes).
A lot of celebrities even like wearing sunglasses at night or indoors! Whatever the reason, celebrities like to wear shades because it makes them feel even more “cool” and “special.” And, as a result, many people try to do the same. The popular and stylish aviator sunglasses and blue lens sunglasses are great examples.
However you may try to explain it, the beauty and appeal of sunglasses just cannot be measured. It is, obviously, widely accepted by wearers of all sects of society, which I believe will never change. Instead, the trend will only continue to grow.
