When first planning your “perfect pool area”, you will have to decide where and how to put the pool – a choice driven by the space available and the relationship of your house and yard. You will want the pool to fit the space without overpowering it. At the same time, you want it to be inviting and impressive. Combine your landscaping and swimming pool lights with hardscaping and architectural features to create your perfect backyard.
Once you finally find the pool of your dreams, you need to find the perfect patio. This underrated space is often the most used of your backyard. Common construction types include flagstone patio, patio pavers and wood patios. Each type will have its own pros and its own cons. You should choose the construction type that best fits your needs, your environment, and your taste.
The element that ties together your pool and patio is pool coping, the masonry product that sits on the edge of the pool itself, often rising above the patio. It’s the hard surface on which you sit when you dangle your feet in the water. Coping material choices are driven by two functions: safety, as the coping needs to be a non-slippery surface; and compatibility as it should match the other material choices you’ve made for your pool landscaping. For some reason many pool owners overlook the importance of pool coping.
If you’ve purchased an older home with an existing older pool (in ground) consider a remodel or restoration of your pool. With a remodeling job, a complete re-do is required. It is a project that involves tailoring the pool to your specific site, including terrain, tree elements, drainage and all structural architecture, and complying with your specific needs and desires. No two remodeling jobs are ever alike and therefore a professional design team is best suited for this extensive venture. While it may sound like a daunting job, a remodel can be considerably cheaper than a brand new pool.
Meanwhile, a restoration project is not quite that involved. It could mean updating the pool decking with more current material choices. Perhaps the pool’s shell needs to be re-surfaced to achieve a particular aesthetic that is available with today’s product offerings. Both avenues are viable options to consider.
