When learning electric guitar, it’s important to focus while you practice.  Without proper concentration and focus, it’s easy to lose track of what your goals in playing guitar are, leaving you to be unsure what to work on and eventually becoming frustrated with your lack of progress.

To gain real focus, you first need to know what you’re focussing on.  This means setting some goals.  It’s worth being clear and specific about what your goals are, you might even want to write them down.  There are different types of goals you should be making – long term goals, medium term goals and short term goals.

A long term goal is one that will take a year or more of consistent work. Your long term goals can be fairly general, and as ambitious as you like.  They might be to become an extremely proficient lead guitar player, to master guitar as used in a specific genre or idiom such as thrash metal or trad jazz, to become conversant in music theory, to play guitar while singing at the same time, or to learn guitar to a standard where you can make your living from it.

A medium term goal is one that you will work towards in the next few months.  These should be some concrete steps towards accomplishing.  It might be to learn a some particular new songs, or to master some chord changes and become adept at improvising over them.

A short term goal is one that you will sit down and work on the next time you practice.  They should be incredibly specific, and should also be very achievable in the near term.  It might be to practice a particular riff until it’s easy, or to be able to sweep pick a particular passage at a certain tempo, or to play a new song you’ve been working on.

Once you have your short goals clear in your head – or even better, down on paper – you will want to clear away some time to work on them.  Eliminate distractions, such as television, and interruptions, such as phone calls or instant messaging programs.  By staying focussed, you will get the most you can from your practice time!

  1. Hello guys,I like your site and it looks very interesting and easy to read, really!. I am from Australia. I love the Soccer and cannot wait till 11th June, can you?.But there is a problem camming from FIFA. It is that doesn´t choose the best teams in this planet for the World Cup which it should otherwise don´t call the World Cup a final, if you want to play soccer for the soul of competition then go to the olympics games. this is basically what the World Cup is turning to, and it su…, ire needed to beat germany to be in and is not, jap beat lowly teams as bahrain, qatar, kuwait, to be in, is this justice I dont think so, just because you are in the World Cup it doesn´t mean that you have the quality to be in like jap can attes. Any way, I expect to see a great final on 11th July and my favorite winner team is Australia, and my favorite player is Zlatan Ibrahimobic.Good blog and keep going.Cu!
