There are many areas in San Diego that have direct access to the ocean and the sea, and it is in these areas that people can find many of the city’s attractions. From pristine beaches fit for surfing and swimming, to seaside clubs and restaurants, and many more. One example of this is the area called Point Loma, a peninsula with a rich history that played a critical role in the creation and development of, not just San Diego, but the whole of California.

Point Loma, which many people call the place “where California began”, is a seaside community that once started out as the port of entry of Europe to California. It was discovered way back in 1542 by Portuguese navigator Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo, but it took nearly 200 years for Point Loma to be fully utilized. It became the port of choice for ships and boats carrying supplies and people heading into California until the 1870s.

Its rich shipping heritage can still be felt today, as Point Loma is now a community that prides itself in its yachting, fishing, and boating activities, along with many other ocean and seaside activities.

Point Loma is home to numerous yacht clubs and marinas, where boat owners dock and live. San Diego Yacht Club is the premiere yacht club of the city, and has been home of the Americas cup for 7 years, from 1988 to 1995. There are also many shops and businesses catering to other marine activities, offering goods and services for fishing, surfing, and many more.

In addition, Point Loma has very beautiful scenery, and ocean views from this place are some of the best in the city. Sunset Cliffs is a premiere attraction for those who, like the name implies, enjoy watching sunsets. Surfing is also good in Point Loma, with beaches like New Break and Luscomb’s offering good surfing areas for enthusiasts from all over the world.

And when visitors and tourists get tired from all of the activities available, they can rest in one of the many hotels and motels available. One of the most famous is Point Loma Youth Hostel, which is the preferred place to stay for many backpackers and travelers from all over the world.

People traveling to San Diego who enjoy the ocean should definitely visit Point Loma, as it is one of the best destinations in the city.  And for those who may decide to make it home, here are some great resources on San Diego real estate and San Diego home loans and second mortgage.
