Tens of thousands have reported receiving emails telling them that they were due a tax refund. The email would ask them to fill in an online form asking for their bank or credit card information. Victims who responded to the email found that their accounts were emptied or card limits used. They also are at risk of having their information sold to other criminal gangs.
Authorities issued a warning to taxpayers not to respond to the “phishing” e-mails. They also are expecting a massive upsurge in such correspondence after the tax deadline when many people will be waiting to hear about genuine tax refunds.
