Because fossil fuels will run out in the near future, governments have been trending towards alternative energy solutions

Anyone who has been actively investing in the stock market in the last couple of years knows of the turbulent, volatile state that the markets have been in.  I have found myself discouraged many times in the last few months, so much so that I have almost given up trying to get ahead by investing.  I dabbled in day trading, but found that day to day and hour to hour fluctuations in the market were turning my hair prematurely gray.  I thought about selling out my stocks and just buying treasury bonds.  Looking at recent t-bill yields, however, discouraged me from pursuing that course.

I decided to look at the mutual fund and ETF market.  Mutual funds are an investment option that allows the investor to diversify their portfolio by buying a fund which owns shares in many different companies.  Mutual funds can be as broad as a total stock market index, or as refined as alternative energy mutual funds.  The later is a specific subset of the energy market sector that includes companies that deal in alternative energy sources.  ETFs are similar, but allow the investor to buy ‘shares’ in whatever can be imagined, such as commodities.  ETFs are able to be even more specific to a market niche.  Because fossil fuels will some day run out, companies have been resesarching new ways to harness naturally occuring energy, such as solar power, wind power, and biofuels.  Advantages of solar energy, to look at a specific example, allow the user to harvest unlimited, free sun light and convert it into electricity.  Investing in these companies may prove to be profitable.

I decided to look into alternative energy mutual funds and ETFs.  Because fossil fuels will run out in the near future, governments have been trending towards alternative energy solutions.  Companies that are jumping on this project and are actively pursuing research and development in ways to improve efficiency and reduce installation costs are companies that I believe will provide future gains.  We will eventually need to shift towards these energy sources, so there will be a large future market for these companies.  This is a huge advantage of investing in this sector.

There are many alternative energy mutual funds and ETFs on the market, some better than others.  Find the right one for your portfolio, and rest assured that the daily fluctuations of the market won’t wreak havoc on your bottom line.
